Help me if I ever get Dugg. For the past 5 years this site has been running on the same server. The server hardware has changed very little, the OS has gone from Windows 2000 Server to Windows XP to Ubuntu Linux. The hardware specs are kind of humorous:

AMD Athlon 900mhz

1GB 133mhz SDRAM

250GB of mirrored hard drive space

A 32mb Geforce Video Card

USB 1.1!!!

ADSL 1.5/128 Connection provided by the wonderful folks at Transbeam

I built this machine from parts back in the Fall of 2000 or thereabouts. It has been running almost constantly since then. There have been several hard drive failures, until I switched to Western Digital drives which so far have been very good. The only other hardware failure was the CPU fan. I had to replace that about 6 months ago. This server hosts not only nothoo.com, but also my other sites (some of which are currently fallow): <a href-"http://www.fairfaxbirding.com">fairfaxbirding.com, nielsclark.com, and brainonblog.com (remember when this site was called Brain on Blog?).

As far as software goes I have been through the gamut of blogging software. I started on the original blogger but it frustrated me so I decided I needed my own server. I then became an early adopter of MovableType and actually gave them money back when it was not mandatory! Getting that running on Windows with IIS was not fun. I then spent a brief period of time on BlogCMS, and one or two other Java based systems. None of these lasted very long. I finally moved to Wordpress sometime 3 or so years ago and have not regretted it.

There you go, not that you asked or that you care.

I finally got a new laptop. This is the first computer that I have bought for myself in 7 or 8 years. The last computer I bought was full tower box that I built myself and is currently the server for this website. It is running Ubuntu after years of running Windows. It is much happier. I fell in love with Linux (Ubuntu specifically) late last year. I was thinking about a Linux laptop but I really wanted something that just worked and required no tinkering. I wanted all of my existing hardware, printer, scanner, etc… to work with little to no fuss. Unfortunately this rules out Linux. I also really, really did not want to go back to Windows. Thus I became a switecher and bought a Mac. Specifically a Macbook Pro. It is a beautiful piece of hardware and I am liking OS X the more that I use it. I really like that it has its underpinnings based off of UNIX (BSD specifically). The new Intel hardware platform that Apple has adopted should make it much easier for me to run the 2 Windows programs that I still rely on. All in all I am very pleased with the Macbook even if it was a bit pricey.

You would think by now that companies would have figured out this whole eCommerce thing, but apparently not. Here is a quote from the Wii tracking site that I linked to earlier:

Today Fry’s website was saying it had the Wii in stock, but actually their ordering server crashed yesterday. It was taking orders this morning, but all those orders (including mine) never went through. when i talked to customer svc, they said they got in 25 wii’s yesterday and they were all sold by last night. just a heads up

So bottom line Fry’s is an incompetent e-tailer and something to avoid. I still have not received an email about my “order” however it still shows as “in-process” on the Fry’s website. I wonder what kind of headache I am now going to have to go through to “cancel” my non-order. Idiots.

That is a Wii plus three games. My order processed and is supposed to ship today via 2 day, so in theory I will have it by my birthday this Friday. My hopes are only moderately elevated though…

I have been continually amazed at how poorly these sites were setup, how much advertising there was, how little information there was, etc… All this was true until I found Weather Underground. Weather Underground is the best weather site that I have yet seen. There are tons of details available, realtime radar, and a very knowledgeable user community. There is some advertising, but you can get rid of it by paying a small annual fee. With this fee you also get access to more data. All in all a great resource for weather info on the net.

Cory Doctorow has an excellent critique of the a user agreement for Amazon’s new downloadable video service Unbox. It is too bad this service is so poor. I was actually considering trying it out. I poked around with it the 1st day it was released and became frustrated by the fact that my purchased videos would not play on my portable player (an iPod) nor could I watch the videos on my TV without getting a TV card and hooking my PC up to my TV! Generally I have had positive experiences with Amazon but this service is one that I will never be using. The really sad part in all of this is that Amazon would probably love to provide me with a better service but the content providers will to allow it. Oh well.
