Wiffle Ball. A plastic ball with oblong holes cut out of 1/2 + a narrow yellow plastic bat = fun.

Way back when, in high school, a friend of mine and I used to play at least 3 times a week. We played on some tennis courts near his house. We played a version where there was no base running (there were after all only 2 of us). The magnitude of the hit, measured in distance and deliniated by various landmarks on the tennis courts, determined the type of hit. The further the more bases. Over the fence was a home run. We would play standard 3 strikes 3 outs 9 innings. We each were a team (me the Atlanta Braves, he the Detroit Tigers). We would have to establish a line-up and would have to bat the handedness of each player. This was back in the late 80s early 90s so names such as Cecil Fielder, Travis Fryman, Alan Trammell, Dave Justice, Ron Gant, and Dale Murphy were the players that were batting for us, through us. We are both righties but we good really good at switch hitting. In fact the longest home run either of us ever hit was by me and it was left-handed. I hit it into the pond that was about 20 feet beyond the fence down the “right-field” line of the tennis court. We also kept track of win loss records. Of course we also played Stratomatic baseball!

I really miss playing wiffle ball and need to find someone to play it with me again…. I bet I will be extremely sore if I do play.

I just finished reading Surviving the Extremes by Kenneth Kamler. I recommend the book to anyone interested in how the body adapts/reacts/copes with extreme environments. The environments specifically discussed in the book are: Jungle, Desert, High Seas, Underwater, High Altitudes, and Space. Amazingly Kamler had personal ancedotes about each and every section! He is a Physician that lives in New York City that has a thriving practice in hand surgery. Hie real love however is clearly being out in the wild plying his trade, sometimes flying by the seat of his pants. His discussions of the human body are deep and enlightening but understandable to a layman like myself. Quite enjoyable.

There is 0.6 seconds left, what do you do? Heave it 87 feet and make the shot of course. Then the next day what do you do? Make the shot again on a live TV news program of course.

I thought I new all of the NFL rules having watched quite a few games in my life, but tonight I learned a new one. The Fair Catch Kick rule. Very interesting. The implication here is that a team could call a fair catch with no time left in the half or game. Upon successfull completion of the fair catch the team can then choose to attempt a field goal or snap the ball. So in essence the half (or game) is continued with no time left. I have never actually seen this happen though.

Virgina Tech player whose brother is deployed in Iraq. They go live to
the brother in Iraq who is sitting in a room with 10 or so other
military personnel. The commentator chats with the brother. Then he
tells him to tell the others to give a wave and a hello to their loved
ones back home. They then cut to the VT player whose brother was being
interviewed, he is on the sideline spitting a huge amount of liquid out
of his mouth. Beautiful. Absolutely brilliant.

If they really want to do this let more women be announcers, I am sure
they are just as good as the men. Hell, most of the announcers are
idiots so they could ceratinly do better. Is it that hard to get
someone competent in these jobs?

And oh yeah, the BCS is idiotic.
