This blog has never been focused, literate, thought-out, or widely read. Because of all of this I have more often than not though of blogging as a chore. Maybe in the beginning heady days, or after the many long hiatuses (like this?), maybe then it was exciting. Anyhow, I am considering diving back in with a foodie blog. I have always had foodie type posts mixed in but it was never my focus. I have been cooking a lot recently and have been devouring cooking and foodie books. I think that if I do start in again I need to figure out my focus. Local food, home cooking, restaurants, … all of the above?

Anyhow, I just might be coming back.

I have been posting to this blog on and off since February 2002. I had another blog that was pretty much the same idea as this one before, but it was hosted and I lost all the posts. I started that one in the fateful days after September 11 2001. Before that I had a plain old website that I hosted via my ISP. I created and maintained that site since I was in college circa 1994 until I created nothoo.com. That is about 13 years! I have started, and abandoned in some cases, various other blogs and sites over the years. All of this reminiscing is because I am going to close the doors on this blog. I am not sure if I am going to keep the site running or not, though I do plan to keep my only other active web presence, Fairfax Birding going.

In case you were wondering the most popular post that I ever made, to any blog was this one.

So, its over and out…

Textmate is reason enough alone to own a Mac. I am just now trying out the blogging bundle and it is really quite awesome. One of the biggest barriers to more frequent blogging, at least for me, is the PITA that it is to open a browser, go to the admin interface of one of my blogs, type it all up in an ugly HTML form and then submit it. It is primarily because of this that I have been doing most of my posting via my nothoo Tumblr. Tumblr is a very cool application but I do not like that I do not have absolute control over the server and my posts. With the TextMate blogging bundle it looks like my woes will be solved, at least if I am at my Mac. Posting from my work machine (running Ubuntu Linux) will not be so smooth but then again I probably should not be posting from work. Right Frank?

Here is what it looks like from within TextMate. This is an update so there are all kinds of fancy details in the header section:

Help me if I ever get Dugg. For the past 5 years this site has been running on the same server. The server hardware has changed very little, the OS has gone from Windows 2000 Server to Windows XP to Ubuntu Linux. The hardware specs are kind of humorous:

AMD Athlon 900mhz

1GB 133mhz SDRAM

250GB of mirrored hard drive space

A 32mb Geforce Video Card

USB 1.1!!!

ADSL 1.5/128 Connection provided by the wonderful folks at Transbeam

I built this machine from parts back in the Fall of 2000 or thereabouts. It has been running almost constantly since then. There have been several hard drive failures, until I switched to Western Digital drives which so far have been very good. The only other hardware failure was the CPU fan. I had to replace that about 6 months ago. This server hosts not only nothoo.com, but also my other sites (some of which are currently fallow): <a href-"http://www.fairfaxbirding.com">fairfaxbirding.com, nielsclark.com, and brainonblog.com (remember when this site was called Brain on Blog?).

As far as software goes I have been through the gamut of blogging software. I started on the original blogger but it frustrated me so I decided I needed my own server. I then became an early adopter of MovableType and actually gave them money back when it was not mandatory! Getting that running on Windows with IIS was not fun. I then spent a brief period of time on BlogCMS, and one or two other Java based systems. None of these lasted very long. I finally moved to Wordpress sometime 3 or so years ago and have not regretted it.

There you go, not that you asked or that you care.

I took the opportunity (if you can call it that) of my primary hard drive crashing to go ahead and abandon Windows in favor of Linux, Ubuntu to be exact. I have been using it on my work laptop and love it so it seemed natural to put it on my server. I think that I have all of the glitches worked out, also upgraded WordPress to the latest 2.0 release. Let me know if you see any issues.
