black (adj):

Being of the color black, producing or reflecting comparatively little light and having no predominant hue. (JC – no light shall be cast back from the depths of a dark Scandinavian winter.)
Having little or no light: a black, moonless night. (JC – the sun is as low as the production can be)

Appearing to emanate from a source other than the actual point of origin. Used chiefly of intelligence operations: black propaganda; black radio transmissions. (JC – well… maybe not.)
Disclosed, for reasons of security, only to an extremely limited number of authorized persons; very highly classified: black programs in the Defense Department; the Pentagon’s black budget. (JC -� are part of the elite?)

Nevermind – That Naked Baby is Now 17

I was pawing through my collection of vinyl last night when I ran across Nirvana’s Nevermind. Seeing the iconic cover, I thought to myself, I wonder what the naked baby is up to these days? This morning as I am checking my RSS feeds I run across a story about Spencer Elden. I am sure that you can guess who Spencer Elden is. Spencer is now 17. I feel old.

Next in my, hopefully, continuing series profiling bands that are less than popular but I feel are worth listening to is Quicksand. In their short life they released one EP and 2 full albums. Both LPs are excellent. Their recorded debut was a self titled EP. In 1993 they released Slip on PolyGram. The single was Dine Alone and it got some airplay upon release but not enough to catapult Quicksand into the mainstream, even though they had the power of a major label behind them at this point. They were a bit too metal/hardcore for the grunge happy climate of the day.

Here is an interesting little promo video for the release of Slip:

Their second and final album, Manic Compression, came out in 1995. The production was cleaner, the songs tighter, and the band even more focused but the album never made it big. Quicksand’s legacy is in their influence on the Post-Hardcore scene of the mid to late 90s.

Earth – The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull, A Sort of Review

I love, love the new album from Earth, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull. It is non-distorted guitar doom metal as written by Ennio Morricone and played by Bill Frisell. Well actually Bill Frisell does play on 2 tracks. The cover is both beautiful and fits the title perfectly:

Upon first getting this album I listened to it 6 or 7 times in one day. That evening I was not yet Earthed out and spent several hours piecing together a video for one of the songs:

I Saw Mastodon Live

This past weekend (2/170/07) I saw Mastodon at the 9:30 Club in DC. This is the first live show I have been to in at least 5 years. First it was a damn good show, second it has rekindled my desire to see live music, and third Mastodon are the best band out there right now. I do not really believe in reviewing live shows as it is impossible to capture the experience in words and unlike an album the experience can be shared with the reader unless they too were there. So my summary of the show is simply that they played all out for ~90 minutes. Neil Fallon from Clutch came out and sang the chorus for Blood and Thunder that he sang on the album. That was very cool.

Bottom-line, buy a Mastodon album and listen to it, you will not regret it.

Bands You Haven’t Heard But Should – Perplexa

I want to try to make this a regular feature here at the old nothoo but time will tell if I am up to such a commitment. I suppose I ought to frame just what the hell I am trying to do here before I go and make future excuses for not doing it on a regular basis. I hope to provide you with a new band that you may not have ever heard of. I realize that on these great interwebs that are so elegantly tubed together that not everyone is going to NOT have heard what I evangelize but what can I do about that?

First up is Perplexa. They have a very Web 0.1 MySpace page as you will have seen if you clicked through on that previous link. Don’t let that deter you. Perplexa are from Detroit, Michigan. They are on the indie label Small Stone which is also from Detroit.

They have released three Long Players, all on Small Stone:

This Glorious Forward – 1997
Perplexa – 1998
The Sun and the Moon Getting It On – 1999

AllMusic provides a very succinct but very spot-on review of The Sun and the Moon Getting it on. I will quote it in its entirety here:

This sexy, after-hours album is all about an intimate post-concert chill-out with your significant other. The Perplexa duo achieves their aphrodisiac sounds with live, rock instruments and dressed up with synthesizer effects.

All three of their albums can be found on Amazon. For the penny-pinchers out there, they can usually be found for under $5 via Amazon Marketplace.

Happily it appears that a new release is slated for sometime in 2007. This is most excellent news.

Tower Records RIP

I have spent more money at Tower Records than at any other record store. News that the winning bid in its bankruptcy auction is by a company that is going to shut down all of the stores, liquidate all of the inventory, and fire all of the employees is sad. This obituary from the Sacramento Bee sums it up best.

I will miss Tower and it will make me yearn all the more for some decent brick and mortar record stores.

PJ Harvey – Peel Sessions

This upcoming Peel Sessions from PJ Harvey ought to be very good. I saw her back when I was but a starving university student on her Rid of Me tour. It was an amazing show and I was shocked as hell to learn that the disturbing background vocals on that album were provided by the drummer, who was a man!

Mastodon – Blood Mountain

[Update: 9/21/2006] Pitchfork reviewed this album yesterday. A great review of a masterful album.

This past Tuesday, September 12th 2006, brought forth the new Mastodon album, Blood Mountain. My expectations were very high and they have been met. I am no record reviewer so I will let you read other’s opinions. But in short, it is a brilliant album. The complexity has gone up as compared to Leviathan, it is defintely more prog than previous efforts, but it still just flat out rocks. My hands were sore from beating on the steering wheel during my commute. It is that good.
