This is satire, right? Please say yes…
If Everyone’s Talking, Who Will Listen?
Money quote:
It’s possible that over time, an energy tax, by making some computers, Web sites, blogs and perhaps cable TV channels too costly to maintain, could reduce the supply of information.
And folks wonder why newspapers are becoming less and less relevant.

Äffchen / Little Monkeys by only_point_five
Curse you simian god, why, why oh why do we not have monkeys (money quote leads paragraph two) in North America?! Of course, if we did they would have probably all have been killed off by now in some sort of monkeys-are-terrorist pronouncement by the TSA.

From late 1995 to March 2008 I had pretty much given up on newspaper comics. Late 1995 saw the end of both The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes. In March 2008 I finally took my dad’s advice and started reading Pearls Before Swine everyday. It took me a few weeks of reading it to really start appreciating it. Now it is the first thing that I read in the morning. As an example, I found yesterday’s particular funny:

Pearls Before Swine 20080705

…and earlier this year the following strip ran (this is my favorite so far):

If you know the strip’s characters the 2nd one is really funny. I can see where not knowing the characters would make it less funny and I think that this is why I did not get into Pearls before making an effort to follow the strip for a few weeks.

Here is my quick summary of the characters to further entice you:

Rat – a Russian Optimist, looking for the angle on everything

Pig – the anti-Rat, nice, humble, and just happy to be alive

Crocs – extremely stupid with only a rudimentary command of language, always trying to get Zebra or some other prey item

Zebra – average Joe, but his neighbors are out to kill and eat him

Goat – a brainy aloof bipedal farm animal

Duck – a military zealot that is hunkered down in Pig’s lawn

Author – the author of the strip, Stephan Pastis, frequently includes himself, almost always in a highly self-deprecating way

I remember going to the British Museum one day to read up the treatment	for some slight ailment of which I had a touch – hay fever, I fancy it was. I got down the book, and read all I came to read; and then, in an unthinking moment, I idly turned the leaves, and began to indolently study diseases, generally. I forget which was the first distemper I plunged into – some fearful, devastating scourge, I know – and, before I had glanced half down the list of “premonitory symptoms,” it was borne in upon me that I had fairly got it.

I sat for awhile, frozen with horror; and then, in the listlessness of despair, I again turned over the pages. I came to typhoid fever – read the symptoms – discovered that I had typhoid fever, must have had it for months without knowing it – wondered what else I had got; turned up St. Vitus’s Dance – found, as I expected, that I had that too, – began to get interested in my case, and determined to sift it to the bottom, and so started alphabetically – read up ague, and learnt that I was sickening for it, and that the acute stage would commence in about another fortnight. Bright’s disease, I was relieved to find, I had only in a modified form, and, so far as that was concerned, I might live for years. Cholera I had, with severe complications; and diphtheria I seemed to have been born with. I plodded conscientiously through the twenty-six letters, and the only malady I could conclude I had not got was housemaid’s knee.

For the past 10 years or so there have been gobs of stories about ridiculous patents being granted. The most famous is probably the Amazon one-click patent. Hardly a day goes by that my RSS reader does not present to me yet another story about a stupid patent either being approved or at least filed. This brings me to my grand announcement: I am going to file for a patent on filing for patents. Unless of course this is already taken. If that is the case then I will file for a patent on filing patent filings for filing patents.
