Damn, What a Loss

Kurt Vonnegut has died.
I always loved Galapagos for its bizarre fusion of natural history, science fiction, and biting wit.

Squid

A post about squid.
Gander at this picture:

read this book: City of Saints and Madmen – Jeff Vandermeer
And finally, try the calamari appetizer at Busara quite simply the best squid that I have ever eaten.

The God Delusion

I am currently reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. I quite like it, though I do not think that I am exactly the target audience for the book. By this I mean that I am already firmly entrenched on the side of reason and science over faith and religion. In his introduction Dawkins states [...]

New Favorite Quote

This just might be my favorite quote ever:

what can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.

This quote is from an article about Mother Theresa on Slate by Christopher Hitchens. I found the quote in the excellent book The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason by Sam Harris.

On Food and Literature

I am currently reading Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome. I ran across the following passage and felt it a great commentary on life and food:

with the world! People who have tried it, tell me that a clear
conscience [...]

Audible, Again

A wee while back I posted about my experiences as a very short-lived audible.com customer. Seeing as the title of my post utilized the phrase “Audible.com Sucks” you can guess my feelings towards them. Fast forward to now, well yesterday actually.
I grabbed the mail and shuffled through the mounds of junk and saw a postcard [...]

Banned Books

Celebrate Banned Books Week by reading a banned book. It is also fun to rasie the hackles of the local bigots and zealots.
While performing my extensive research for this post I read through various reviews of banned books on Amazon. One of the most entertaining is this review of Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen:

This [...]

Amazon Marketplace – Follow-up

I posted earlier this week about how I am now a seller at Amazon Marketplace, well I want to follow-up on that post with my experience of the past 4 days.
I have already sold 9 items totaling about $160.00. Had I taken these books to a local mom and pop used book store I would [...]

Amazon Marketplace

For the longest time Amazon has had a link to buy used/new from Marketplace sellers on each product page. I always ignored this until one day, out of desperation and necessity, I finally clicked on the link. Once through I found that they provide a nice list of all the used and new copies that [...]

Shelby Foote RIP

Shelby Foote died last night. I am not a huge Civil War buff but I did see the Ken Burns documentary and read the first volume of Foote’s excellent Civil War history.
