Ivorybill Woodpecker Rumors

[Another Update 9/26/2006] Over at the Stokes Birding Blog there is a nice post that provides more links and details.

[Update 9/26/2006] Here is a link to the article that apparently created this rumor.

It has been almost 2 years since the announcement that there was at least one Ivorybill Woodpecker living in the swamps of Arkansas. Since then there has been very little hard evidence produced to back this extraordinary claim. The evidence that has been produced (a very short, very grainy video and sightings by some skilled observers) has been questioned, and the questions answered. I for one am happy that the land that was purchased to protect the Ivorybill has been preserved, Ivorybill or not. Now there are some rumors starting to circulate that there is another site where a “major” University is studying 9 pairs of Ivorybills! If true this would be amazing, but we need some evidence. This evidence is, again, rumored to be forthcoming at the next AOU meeting. We shall see.
