Audible, Again

A wee while back I posted about my experiences as a very short-lived audible.com customer. Seeing as the title of my post utilized the phrase “Audible.com Sucks” you can guess my feelings towards them. Fast forward to now, well yesterday actually.

I grabbed the mail and shuffled through the mounds of junk and saw a postcard from my old friends at Audible. It was an offer for something like 15 books for $120, the details really don’t matter here. I found this amusing and figured that I was on their inactive customer list and this was bait aimed at getting me back. The postcard went with the other junk right into the trash can. Fast forward to dinner time that same evening.

Dinner-time phone calls are all too common, what is not common is us answering them. At least 90% of the time the caller ID unmasks some sort of telemarketer. Mid swallow of my left-over steak sandwich (Virginia Kobe Skirt steak grilled just shy of med-rare) the bleeding thing, the phone not the sandwich, starts ringing. Lo and behold this time the caller ID tells me that it is none other than Audible calling. You betcha that I answered this one! The man on the other end wanted to know if I was enjoying my Audible service. Needless to say I had a few words on the topic. He was very nice and said something to the effect of, “lots of people complain about the same things and we are working on changing things…”. Specifically in reference to the DRM nightmare that the Audible files are mired in. He wished me good night and asked if I would use them in the future, I said, “Highly unlikely.”

Will they change? Not likely in my opinion. At least not until the masses understand what is happening right now with Intellectual Property laws and how consumers are getting the very short end of the stick.
