For the longest time Amazon has had a link to buy used/new from Marketplace sellers on each product page. I always ignored this until one day, out of desperation and necessity, I finally clicked on the link. Once through I found that they provide a nice list of all the used and new copies that are for sale through Amazon Marketplace members. I read through the details and realized that a) Amazon processes the transaction so I do not need to give anyone my credit card info and b) Amazon guarantees the transaction. With all of this I placed my order for Lars Jonsson’s absolutely gorgeous and magnificent Birds and Light.
The book arrived in a little less than week, packed nicely and in the promised condition. Since then I have started ordering more and more books from Marketplace sellers, so far no bad experiences. I have even gone a step further and become a Marketplace seller myself. I have far too many books; many of them books that I have never read nor do I plan to ever read. I also have lots of old computer books that cost me a fortune but are pretty useless to me since they are all about Microsoft’s technologies, .NET, MFC. COM etc… and I am now a Java developer. This is a great way for me to unload these books at a far better price than I would get if I took them to a used book seller in my area.
I highly recommend the service and think that Amazon, even though they have been awarded too many idiotic patents to count, is a very smart company with a great business model.
